Causation in Global Conflict
Driving Question: What were the most significant causes of global conflict from 1900 to the present, and how did their impact shape the world?
In this final lesson of the unit, you’ll identify and revise an essay based on the Evidence, Sourcing, and Complexity rows of the WHP DBQ Writing Rubric. You will also be able to make connections from this unit and demonstrate your learning by analyzing the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany through a DBQ of your own.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the relative significance of the causes of global conflict in the period 1900 to the present.
- Analyze and revise evidence, sourcing, and complexity in a DBQ student sample essay.
- Create and support arguments with historical evidence to analyze the rise of the Nazi Party.
You can break this activity into smaller tasks by having student pairs underline areas of the essay that have evidence, sourcing, and complexity. Then, ask students to individually suggest some ways to improve these areas of the student essay.
It’s time to act like the teacher! Get ready to mark up an essay!
Do your students need more help with their LEQ writing skills rather than their DBQ skills? You can turn any of our DBQs into LEQs by sharing the prompt and the LEQ Writing Rubric with students.
Assess your students’ historical writing skills by having them highlight their DBQ responses based on the rubric categories. They will highlight their thesis in one color, contextualization in another color, their evidence in a different color, and analysis and reasoning (sourcing and complexity) in yet another color.
You’ve learned a lot this unit—now it’s time to use your writing skills to complete a Document-Based Question about the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany.
