Driving Question: How did economic developments and new transoceanic connections affect social structures in different parts of the world from c. 1450 to 1750 CE?

Ushering in the dawn of a new global age is no easy task! At this point, you are ready to draw some larger conclusions about the content you have been learning about throughout the unit. Practice identifying evidence and demonstrate your new knowledge through responding to your own long essay question.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain how economic developments from 1450 to 1750 affected social structures over time.
  2. Identify evidence, historical reasoning, and complexity in an LEQ student sample essay.
  3. Create and support arguments using historical evidence to evaluate how economic developments from c. 1450 to 1750 impacted social structures subsequently.
STEP 1

Writing: LEQ Evidence, Historical Reasoning, and Complexity Part 1

Teaching Tools

You can break this activity into smaller tasks by having student pairs underline areas of the essay that have evidence, historical reasoning, and complexity. Then, ask students to individually suggest some ways to improve these areas of the student essay.

STEP 2

Assessment: Unit 4 LEQ

Teaching Tools

This is the first writing assessment focused on continuity and change over time. Help your students prepare to write their arguments by having them fill out the CCOT Tool External link with the changes and continuities they’ve learned about in their study of the transition of land-based empires to transoceanic empires.

Assess your students’ historical writing skills by having them highlight their LEQ responses based on the rubric categories. They will highlight their thesis in one color, contextualization in another color, their evidence and analysis in a different color, and finally, their reasoning (complexity) in yet another color.

From 1450-1750, transatlantic trade changed world economics. Did economics in turn affect social structures? That is the question you will address in this Unit 4 LEQ.
