Contemporary Conflict: Historical Analysis for Hard Questions
“Why should I care about a war on the other side of the world?” Student questions about contemporary conflict can put real pressure on the classroom. This workshop is about creating a framework for helping students use historical analysis to understand the conflicts that shape our world. You’ll explore teacher resources, student-driven inquiry moves, and tips for teaching sensitive topics with clarity. You’ll leave with an approach you can use to guide discussion, support evidence-based thinking, and help students investigate conflict with greater depth and context.

About the facilitator: Bennett Sherry is one of the historians working on OER Project. He received his PhD in world history from the University of Pittsburgh and has taught courses in world history, human rights, and the modern Middle East. Bennett is a recipient of the Pioneer in World History award from the World History Association, and is coauthor of The Long Nineteenth Century, 1750–1914: Crucible of Modernity (2nd ed).
