Credit: “Healthcare Spending Data Exploration,” OER Project, https://www.oerproject.com/PurposeAnalyze data sets to understand the relationships between healthcare spending, wealth, and inequality in health outcomes.ProcessThe data and information below is adapted from the article “Healthcare Spending,” by Our World in Data. 1.Use the maps below to answer the questions that follow.•Burden of diseaseis the overall impact of a health problem on a population, measured by the combined effects of premature death, illness, and injury. What patterns do you notice about the relationship between burden of disease and total health spending per person?

Now, looking at the same region as above, write a claim describing the relationship between burden of disease and total health spending per person. 2.Read the information and review the chart below, and then use the chart’s data to answer the questions that follow. How strong is the link between healthcare expenditure and national income? When comparing countries, the strongest predictor of healthcare spending is national income. The visualization shows a clear pattern: countries where people earn more on average tend to spend more money on healthcare per person. In general, wealthier countries are much more likely to invest a larger share of their income in healthcare.
OERPROJECT / GLOBAL HEALTHHEALTHCARE SPENDING DATA EXPLORATION3•GDP per capitais the average amount of money produced per person in a country each year, which helps show how wealthy that country is overall. Explore the healthcare spending vs GDP per capita over time using thislink: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/healthcare-expenditure-vs-gdp.•Use the regional navigator with the colored boxes on the right-hand side of the chart to explore trends among regions. Pick one region and describe what you notice about healthcare spending versus GDP per capita over time.Region: ____________________________

The arrowsshow the change over time for all countries in the world. Overall, the chart shows that as countriesspendmore money on healthcare, child mortality tends to decrease. When we focus on how countries change over time, we can see an interesting pattern. There are largedifferences in child mortality levels between countries: Rates in the wealthiest countries are nearly 100 times lower than in the poorest ones. However, the trends over time are surprisingly similar. Countries around the world, regardless of how rich or poor they are, tend to see similar percentage declines in child mortality as healthcare spending increases. This suggests that increased health spending is linked to improvements in child survival across very different contexts.

How did child mortality change in this country between 2000 and 2023?Country: ____________________________•Does the change in child mortality in the countries you chose support the claims in the paragraphs above? Support your answer with evidence. •Using what you learned in this data exploration and your background knowledge, what do you think are the most significant factors in the decline in child mortality rates globally from 2000 to 2023?•Using what you learned in this data exploration and your background knowledge, what do you think are the most effective ways to reduce the inequality that still exists in child mortality rates between countries today?
