OER Project KA Writing Coach Guide
Writing Coach is a Khan Academy tool powered by Khanmigo that guides students through understanding the assignment, outlining, drafting, and revising academic essays, while providing feedback on thesis, evidence, structure, and language—without doing the writing for them. In partnership with Khan Academy, the OER Project has created ready-to-use LEQ assignments on Writing Coach in a dedicated OER Project tab under Social Studies.After selecting an assignment, you can edit and assign it. You’ll choose between two options: Full Essay Writingor Essay Feedback & Revision. Full Essay Writingguides students through every stage of the process from understanding the prompt to revising and includes originality checks, giving you visibility into how students develop their work. Essay Feedback & Revisionprovides targeted feedback on an existing draft but does not include originality checks. Both options are designed to strengthen students’ writing skills.The prompt is pre-filled, but you can edit it as needed. Finally, select a class and due date, and the assignment is ready to share with students.Teacher insightsWriting Coach provides a consolidated Insights Reportfor each student, showing progress over time, revision history, time spent writing, word count, feedback received and resolved, and any originality flags. You can also review the full revision process, including a detailed Essay History with time spent per session, work completed, and the student’s chat history with Khanmigo.Good things to knowWriting Coach is a powerful AI-supported tool, but like all AI technologies, it has limitations and works best with teacher guidance. It is a writing coach, not ahistory coach. The tool helps students strengthen their writing by giving feedback on how effectively they use evidence to support claims, but it does not reliably evaluate the historical accuracy of that content.
