OER Project WH Maptivities Archive
OER Project: World History Maptivities Archive Note: While we will be creating a new series of maptivities in the coming year, we heard you loud and clear when you asked: where are the maptivities?? Here you’ll find an archive of the “old” maptivities to tide you over until the new and improved versions are published. How these maptivities work: An opening geography activity orients students in time and space, providing some geographic context for what the world looked like in that time period. In these opening activities, students are asked to examine a set of maps and brainstorm some predictions about major changes in the coming era/unit.Toward the end of each unit, the more detailed closing map activities have students applying their CCOT and causation skills to analyze themes such as long-distance trade, the spread of religion, the transatlantic slave trade, and imperialism. In these closing activities, students use geographic evidence to respond to writing prompts based on the unit/era problems and frame narratives.OriginsNote: we’ve aligned the maptivities from the older version of Origins to the existing version, hence the mis-match between eras and units.ActivityRecommended lesson locationEra 1 Mapping1.2: What is World HistoryEra 2 Mapping Part 12.1: The Earliest HumansEra 2 Mapping Part 22.5: The Biggest Mistake Humans Ever Made?Era 3 Mapping Part 14.1: Empires and Belief SystemsEra 3 Mapping Part 24.6: Women in the Ancient WorldEra 4 Mapping Part 15.1: Collapse and RestructuringEra 4 Mapping Part 25.7: Expanding the Silk RoadsEra 5 Mapping Part 16.1: The First Global AgeEra 5 Mapping Part 26.9: The Transatlantic Slave TradeEra 6 Mapping Part 17.1: The Long Nineteenth CenturyEra 6 Mapping Part 27.10: Resisting ColonialismEra 7 Mapping Part 18.1: Century of ConflictEra 7 Mapping Part 28.9: Decolonization
