Deeper Discussions in Social Studies

When discussion is working, students do more than speak—they think together. But preparation is important; you can’t just toss a question out there and say “discuss.” Led by Professor Abby Reisman (UPenn) and Maya Jonsson, who teaches in Philadelphia, this workshop focuses on how to make meaningful discussions happen. You’ll look at discussion moves, structures, and strategies that help students listen closely, respond thoughtfully, and build ideas together. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore new lessons—created by Deeper Discussion—that use OER Project materials to create classroom-ready tools that support richer, more-meaningful discussion in your own classroom.

About the facilitator: Dr. Abby Reisman is an associate professor of teacher education at Penn GSE. She received her PhD from Stanford University, where she directed the Reading Like a Historian project in San Francisco.
